Galata Songlines – an analysis of time, memory and orientation – interactive audio visual installation
The installation Galata Songlines shows a portrait of the Istanbul quarter Galata. blackhole-factory has been wandering around Galata for some days scanning their surroundings. The collection of impressions is now arranged like ornaments, rendering in an abstract composition a remix of the region. The space shows a virtual map of Galata as a double screen video projection, combined with field recordings. Fragments of traditional folklore and everyday culture are embedded in the map. Each dot on the projected image symbolizes one scanned situation. Moments blend into each other when walking with the mouse across the map.
Songline is a concept used in the culture of indigenous Australians. Songlines are an intricate series of song cycles that identify landmarks and subtle tracking mechanisms for navigation in open country.
