Back in Germany already. Opening day was exciting. There was still a lot of work to do until at 7 p.m. audience could arrive. We managed it – last little things 5 minutes before start – as usual.
Already during the day many people came for a moment to see what happened. Including the russian ambassodor, if i got that right. I was so busy, that i did not talk long in these hours.
But there was Diana Mardi, who showed the objects and could explain everything about the project. Laura had a tough time too. we exhibit in two rooms. One shows the object based westbank work we did together here and the other shows the movies and photographs the collegues sent from Gaza. They had everything on the walls the night before, but in the morning a part of the pictures had fallen down. panic! They managed it again, Laura, Azzam and i think some more, everything was looking perfect in the evening, but this was the first moment, i saw Laura a little nervous.
The Gaza work is really good. It is a shame, that we could not exchange more with these artists.
Also the interactive installation got ready. Together with the real objects which are exclusively made of trash things from the dumps it is linking the whole story of the trans4m orchestra.

Opening. at seven Imam came into the installation space and said “come on now, we are starting the party!” – In here everybody still plucking a little bit the little objects to their right position…

Opening ceremony was huge. It happened in the space, where the Gaza material is exposed. Official talks by Fareed Majari, director of Goethe-Institut Ramallah, the Palestinian Minister of Culture, the German Ambassador and the second Mayor of Ramallah.
The room full of cameras and microphones, from german journalists Meike Jansen and Mirko Heinemann until the russian TV, and many important persons in the audience … interesting scenery. Certainly the work has been mentioned in the political context – it is including much more, but we cannot expect to have politics behind in this reality.

After the talks we had a last conference with the friends in Gaza. This time only telephone, video could not be installed. Touching moments, when we had to tell each other about our interest to exchange and the hope that we can meet one day. Maha Issa said, it is a shame we dont meet, in a moment we come to notice that we are observing our work in a similar way, having a lot in common in our approach to materials etc. – then i had to answer, being helped by a translator. started to cry. such a strange moment… well, we said goodbye, but maybe another day we will meet at another place. at least we know about each other now.

and then, after tears, the opening party was great. the installation was successful, people stayed long time watching and discussing it. our Palestinian Collegues were happy to have long conversations about the work and their objects. The buffet was empty, wine and sweets lasted longer, nice night.

Goodbye to all the new friends for now, but this does not mean forever.

opening day, morning. still a lot to do. The interactive installation including all the sounds and visuals we collected has to be finished. this will be an interesting challenge. the rest is looking wonderful in the beautiful exhibition space. it was a long day yesterday, but we had so much help, that everything went more or less easy. Everybody came to install his own objects. now the space works like an imaginary landscape while all the objects are carrying their special memories –

ok, it was adventurous to install the lights. at the end Imam called his father, who came with a long ladder to help. super people. and late at night we had our own little party in the installation. laura brought some fried chicken and chips and we had juices and beer – and martin had some palestinian music in the laptop. there were Imam, Azzam, Laura, a technical assistant, Meike Jansen, Martin, Martin and me. last song was the Ramallah-song, and the palestinian friends showed us, how they dance it. i was happy with this unofficial opening. the work still pure and in a way privat – now we have to go to finish and start the official thing.

Already finishing. Today we go to set everything up in the Ottoman Court, beautiful historic building near the citycenter. Yesterday Meike Jansen was joining the day with us in the Young Artists Forum. there she could meet the activists in the project. we had some good conversations about the work and also about the living situation of our palestinian collegues. it is different to really be here – well, we all know that –
standing on real streets, talking to real persons, that means we come to views we never get from newspapaers and tv- and having some good friends here now we never more can think about palestine without faces in our mind and the memory of sharing some impressive moments.
a productive day, all the objects have got ready. now we can go to set up.

in this project all of the participants have been confronted with unexpected and unknown situations. those who stayed joined intensive days
right at the beginning we were shocked by the number of people coming to the kick-off meeting. there were 5 gaza based artists waiting for a permit to come or for the video conference. then we met about 12 students and 6 professional artists from Ramallah, together with Diana Mardi, the journalist who would accompany the work.
after short time the group was shrinking – waste is not a topic many poeple dare to touch with their hands.
in Gaza stayed 4 artists – Maha Issa, Mohamed Harb, Shareef Sarhan and Mohammed Mussallam. Yesterday their objects and photos have been brought here by somebody of the french cultural institute.
in Ramallah we spent most of the time with 2 students, Bashar Zarour and Imam Al Hasnya, who also went to all the excursions and fieldstudies. 3 more came to work in the afternoon.
From the professional artists stayed Majdi Hadid spending a lot of time in the studio, Ahmad Nassar and Diana Mardi. Some came visiting from time to time, but did not really get involved in the material and the process. this nucleus in Ramallah, built by 11 people including martin, martin and elke, found a good way to collaborate, discuss and create together. unfortunately the contact with the artists from gaza was difficult, but at least we will see their statements to the exhibition now.
tomorrow during the opening there is another video conference being planned so we can meet them again.
