Already finishing. Today we go to set everything up in the Ottoman Court, beautiful historic building near the citycenter. Yesterday Meike Jansen was joining the day with us in the Young Artists Forum. there she could meet the activists in the project. we had some good conversations about the work and also about the living situation of our palestinian collegues. it is different to really be here – well, we all know that –
standing on real streets, talking to real persons, that means we come to views we never get from newspapaers and tv- and having some good friends here now we never more can think about palestine without faces in our mind and the memory of sharing some impressive moments.
a productive day, all the objects have got ready. now we can go to set up.

in this project all of the participants have been confronted with unexpected and unknown situations. those who stayed joined intensive days
right at the beginning we were shocked by the number of people coming to the kick-off meeting. there were 5 gaza based artists waiting for a permit to come or for the video conference. then we met about 12 students and 6 professional artists from Ramallah, together with Diana Mardi, the journalist who would accompany the work.
after short time the group was shrinking – waste is not a topic many poeple dare to touch with their hands.
in Gaza stayed 4 artists – Maha Issa, Mohamed Harb, Shareef Sarhan and Mohammed Mussallam. Yesterday their objects and photos have been brought here by somebody of the french cultural institute.
in Ramallah we spent most of the time with 2 students, Bashar Zarour and Imam Al Hasnya, who also went to all the excursions and fieldstudies. 3 more came to work in the afternoon.
From the professional artists stayed Majdi Hadid spending a lot of time in the studio, Ahmad Nassar and Diana Mardi. Some came visiting from time to time, but did not really get involved in the material and the process. this nucleus in Ramallah, built by 11 people including martin, martin and elke, found a good way to collaborate, discuss and create together. unfortunately the contact with the artists from gaza was difficult, but at least we will see their statements to the exhibition now.
tomorrow during the opening there is another video conference being planned so we can meet them again.

just arrived at the studio. nobody here yet, so i can use some quiet and peaceful minutes to talk a little about what´s happening. yesterday i was in the radio, inviting people to come and see the exhibition and telling them about the project. ram.fm is the name of the radiostation, made by some people from south africa. they broadcast in israel and palestine. and by the help of modern music they get the younger generation to listen also to interesting discussions they give space. good work. with me was Fareed Majari, director of the Goethe-Institut in Ramallah, and Mirko Heinemann, who just arrived and already at his first day here dived into all the discussions

Mirko and Martin Kroll are now on the way to Gaza. they seem to have a permit to go. They are travelling accompanied by Laura Werres, our nice and absolutely helpful project organizer. Without her coordinating meetings, organizing tools and materials, food, contacts… this work would not be possible. try to meet her in berlin when this project is finished! she is studying at the FU.

ok, those guys are going to Gaza in the car of GTZ and with their driver. we hope, they don´t get stuck too long at the checkpoints, having some soldiers pointing with their guns on them. (we had that already some days ago, not so nice.) if lucky, they will bring the exhibit part of the Gaza based artists. if more complicated, they will bring photos and interviews. we will see.

Martin Slawig is going to the market with Ramzi Azar, who is working as the driver for Goethe-Institut. in his second profession he is a DJ. now they are going together to find some interesting arabic music – maybe we will include some samples in the installation, the rest is for the documentation and for us to enjoy. the next party at our railwaystation-studio will have palestina sound then too. the project is really interesting and exciting for us. what we are missing are some free hours just to drift around, hang out at nice coffee shops or go shopping on the colourful market. maybe saturday. it is nice to walk in the city of ramallah. there are so many changing atmospheres, surprising sounds, smells of herbs and spices.

now today we will have to finish some trash objects for the exhibition or to help some of the students to finish their works. Riyad has found some beautiful very old photographs of palestinian families. we will see, how we can bring them into one of the objects by the help of a small monitor.
will try to do that now.

Lunchtime. Martin and Mirko are back. they did not get the permit to go to Gaza. Somebody forgot to put their birthdates on the application they have to send to israel. as i understood the problem. what can i say?
now they went to a special checkpoint around here to record sounds and make some interviews. Diana, the palestinian journalist is with them. she will bring sounds of footsteps and has some special plans.
Diana did not arrive yesterday. today she told us that she was in nablus and on the way back somebody shot in the area of a checkpoint. everything stopped for hours.

Majdi and Martin S. are working with a videotape they found on the dump, trying to find out, if we can use some samples of it.
we have been in the newspaper! Al Qudz news (hope it´s the right writing)
Our familytable is working. we will show it later.
every day we get stuck in organization stuff, but things are developing too. we can even work tomorrow here in the studio. we had to discuss that again, because it is the arabic weekend. but at the end everything goes.
somebody will travel to tel aviv to buy black wrap, somebody has to go to jerusalem to find steel wire, an electrician has to be found, who builds the lighting system for the exhibition, we already found a person to help installing everything saturday. Azzam, i forgot his family name. he works for the french cultural institute and is the one who is in charge for the installation of exhibitions in the french-german cultural institute. we are lucky to have him with us. and he also was with us travelling to Hebron and the Yatta dump. good to have some people around who understand what this all is about…

now in the evening we have all the missing materials. nobody had to got to tel aviv for it, not even to jerusalem. everything goes.
meike jansen, journalist of taz berlin arrived today to make a report about the project. will see her tomorrow.

slowly ideas get formed. the different sub-projects are developing. exhibition will take place at the Ottoman Court in Ramallah, sunday 28th. opening at 7 p.m. – and stay for a week. Then it goes travelling. concrete dates are not yet fixed. Mirko is arriving now. he is on the way to American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem. there he will be picked up by Ramzi, the driver of Goethe-Institut, who also went with us to all the dump sites and other excursions. it is a special experience coming from the comfortable Hotel to the wall and cross the checkpoint to Ramallah. a rapid change in sights and atmospheres.

the first part of the interactive map we are constructing is getting ready. some of you might know the „mappingBS“ installation we did last year. the map we construct here is based on this model, but much more elaborated. it will show parts of the palestinian map in different scales. and it will include video sequences, photographs and a huge collection of sounds the whole group recorded during the project time. Mainly it will offer a sound walk in palestine, from time to time giving a short view into the places we visited. if it is possible we will show a part of it also here. Visitors can do this walk on the map by help of a computer-mouse. The map is projected and all manipulations are visible there. so you know, where you are walking. Sounds and visuals can be found on the map as red dots, put where the material comes from originally. and if you move between these dots, you get a combination of the closest sounds.

that´s what we put together with all the artists, letting the map talk in its own language. talking about palestine and about waste. project´s name stays trans4mOrchestra – waste Palestine. in the exhibition we will show also a number of objects or smaller installations which originate in the collection of waste material from the dump sites. the studio gets every day more smelly, but more complex in stories and things. there is a wall being built as a reconstruction of a cave, the young workers on the Yatta dump showed us. you can see the photo of it. one is developing a dirt shop, looking like the street shops, but containing trash. sound recordings of streetseller will be added. there is a dinner table made of trash and a hanging man, reminding of the tarot card – seing the world upside down. much more. the room will be dark and things only have a light glow to be observed. today we are working on this lighting system.

now we have been some days digging in the waste dumps around. sometimes thought we got used to the smell, but after a while it gets hard. some of our our palestinian collegues are really tough, especially the students like Imam and Bashar. 17 years old brave guys, good company in a lot of adventures. but also they start to complain today. maybe it is difficult to imagine what we experienced the last days walking in waste dumps. talking to children who work there every day. some of them showed us their secret places and instructed us how to dig out interesting things – we made a huge collection of materials like shoes, kitchen stuff, bones… and there are some interesting sub-projects arising from these experiences in the group. the main group is built now by about ten people. the youngest one is 14, Rafat, who has his own strong plan for the exhibition. a diverse group of people and so we have good discussions about our common materials. we will show you later some pictures from the caves in the dump, the artists group and people we met. today again we had a video conference with the gaza based artists. they will not get a permit to come to ramallah, but they will send their works to the exhibitions opening on sunday. it is a pity that we cannot meet personally as it would be interesting to share experiences and thoughts. tomorrow arrives mirko heinemann here, a german journalist, good friend of Martin Kroll. he will make a reportage and stay with us until the opening. Mirko and Kroll will travel to gaza on thursday, meet the artists there and bring their materials to ramallah. we are still in the young artists forum now. surrounded by the trash collection. the room looks interesting now. i close this now, want to go to the hotel and have a shower. maybe tomorrow we find the time to post some new photos.

finally we could start the real work yesterday. excursion to Nablus with all the checkpoint-problems and what you can expect travelling through Palestine. we went together with some of the young artists from Ramallah, Laura Werres, the project manager of Goethe-Institut for this project, Diana Mardi, a palestinian journalist, Markus Luecke from GTZ and some more company to Nablus and different waste sites around. Beside the checkpoint questions had some experiences with landscape, like our taxi was not able to bring us up the hills in the desert… what was helpful to find inspiring places and meet people… hot sun, lots of dust and at the end all our feet in the waste dump. sorry that i cannot give you a little peace of smell now. so maybe you can visit the exhibition and try it…

photo: blackhole-factory

the plan is to construct an installation containing waste objects, video, sound, photos. we will bring all the material together until sunday 28th and exhibit at the Goethe-Institut in Ramallah. the installation will then travel and be shown in Gaza, Jenin, Bethlehem, Jerusalem and Berlin.
