AGENTS OF SYNCHRONICITY is an innovative new work by blackhole-factory that draws on Anthropocenic notions of the autonomous nature of dispersed environmental events, and their repercussions on the world in which we live. Five microphone agents installed in remote international locations stream environmental acoustic events, as data, for an algorithm to manipulate pure sound frequencies, and a 3D printer from a central machine server. This autonomous machine agent performance incorporates indeterminate soundscapes and 3D printed objects produced from synchronous collisions of random acoustic events in each dispersed location.
A.O.S.C. is a autonomously working networked system which uses the unique acoustic environments of 5 remote places to compose a new abstract environment in a 6th place.
In a complexly interconnected global reality, the impact of individual actions is not easy to estimate. The loop of action, impact and reaction to the actor is interrupted. And so the effects of our activities also affect slightly distant places, distant people and even later generations, without our being able to perceive this. The relationship between decision, action and responsibility therefore needs regular clarification. (according to Jens Kersten: Das Anthropozän-Konzept)
We observe various acoustic environments. The sounds of a place represent a singular, unique composition of the sounds of nature, the earth and the human being. This composition is not accidental. All elements influence each other so that, according to Murray Schafer, the soundscape can be seen as an indicator of social conditions and allows conclusions about the development direction of the respective society.
The sound of the environment is an acoustic representation of the area.
With A.O.S.C. we create a space where the soundscapes from far away places are related. At the point of departure for this work was the interest in observing how small everyday occurrences at remote locations affect each other when they are networked. For the collection and analysis of such everyday micro-events, we have developed our “agents”, who are equipped with a microphone to listen to the environment in which they were exposed.
blackhole-factory sent out 5 microphone agents to international places where they permanently perceive the actual soundscape and stream the analysis of the sound spectrum into the installation space.
A central computer interprets these informations with regard to frequency, texture and synchronous events. The emerging space consists of soundscape, light, the movement of a machine and 3d printed objects.
The soundscapes themselves are now becoming composers of an abstract symphony, which tells of the differences and synchronicities in the networked environments.
In this autonomous networked agent-machine installation, the musical level is designed by a software synthesizer that converts the received frequency spectra back into sounds in real time. This results in the concert of the agents, which consists of fragile fine-tuned textures and powerful, aggressive rhythm-based eruptions.
Each agent controls a drone as well as a series of short tones produced by a FM synthesis patch programmed in Max/MSP.
During the performance the system autonomously recalls presets for the FM synthesis patch. The interpolation between the presets is controlled by the amount of synchronous events within a certain frequency band at two or more places.
The 3D printer shapes live an illustration of musical creation. A three-dimensional quotation is produced as a cast sound. The resulting objects are collected in the installation.
The agents are constructed using a RaspberryPi, a Cirrus Logic Audio Card and a POE Splitter in a waterproofed box. The RPi is running a PureData patch for analysing the signal from the microphone. For the analysis we are using the [melSpec~] object from the timbreID library from William Brent.
The agents are configured in a way that we can remote control them as soon as they are connected to the internet at the remote places.
The central computer in the installation space is running custom software based on Max/MSP for audio FM synthesis, 3d printer control, light control, graphics.
The performance was premiered on the 12th of February 2016 at Studio_A | Kunstmühle Braunschweig, Germany.
