trans4m Orchestra – Waste Palestine
the exhibition is still to be seen until nov 3rd in the Ottoman Court in Ramallah.
Maybe some days longer.
Then it will start travelling.
Back in Germany already. Opening day was exciting. There was still a lot of work to do until at 7 p.m. audience could arrive. We managed it – last little things 5 minutes before start – as usual.
Already during the day many people came for a moment to see what happened. Including the russian ambassodor, if i got that right. I was so busy, that i did not talk long in these hours.
But there was Diana Mardi, who showed the objects and could explain everything about the project. Laura had a tough time too. we exhibit in two rooms. One shows the object based westbank work we did together here and the other shows the movies and photographs the collegues sent from Gaza. They had everything on the walls the night before, but in the morning a part of the pictures had fallen down. panic! They managed it again, Laura, Azzam and i think some more, everything was looking perfect in the evening, but this was the first moment, i saw Laura a little nervous.
The Gaza work is really good. It is a shame, that we could not exchange more with these artists.
Also the interactive installation got ready. Together with the real objects which are exclusively made of trash things from the dumps it is linking the whole story of the trans4m orchestra.
Opening. at seven Imam came into the installation space and said “come on now, we are starting the party!” – In here everybody still plucking a little bit the little objects to their right position…
Opening ceremony was huge. It happened in the space, where the Gaza material is exposed. Official talks by Fareed Majari, director of Goethe-Institut Ramallah, the Palestinian Minister of Culture, the German Ambassador and the second Mayor of Ramallah.
The room full of cameras and microphones, from german journalists Meike Jansen and Mirko Heinemann until the russian TV, and many important persons in the audience … interesting scenery. Certainly the work has been mentioned in the political context – it is including much more, but we cannot expect to have politics behind in this reality.
After the talks we had a last conference with the friends in Gaza. This time only telephone, video could not be installed. Touching moments, when we had to tell each other about our interest to exchange and the hope that we can meet one day. Maha Issa said, it is a shame we dont meet, in a moment we come to notice that we are observing our work in a similar way, having a lot in common in our approach to materials etc. – then i had to answer, being helped by a translator. started to cry. such a strange moment… well, we said goodbye, but maybe another day we will meet at another place. at least we know about each other now.
and then, after tears, the opening party was great. the installation was successful, people stayed long time watching and discussing it. our Palestinian Collegues were happy to have long conversations about the work and their objects. The buffet was empty, wine and sweets lasted longer, nice night.
Goodbye to all the new friends for now, but this does not mean forever.
